About Isshin-Ryu Karate

Isshin Ryu is an Okinawan art that is a blend of two styles, Shorin-Ryu and Goju-Ryu.  From the way we block to the way our fist is held and thrown is all unique to Isshin Ryu, not just Okinawan karate. Today with all the commercial martial art schools, we must maintain our tradition and value that a true art has to offer.

The Bushido Dojo

Our main style of teaching is Isshinryu Karate. We also teach Mataoshi Kobudo (weapons), Chen style Taiji, and Seito Sosuishitsu-Ryu .  We are confident in the balance that Isshinryu, Matayoshi, Taiji, and Jujutsu has to offer for real combat training as well as sport karate.  We keep to our traditional roots and focus on wholistic training.  At our dojo; we train people of all ages, families, and different personal goals.  We want to shape your training into a life long practice of a real martial art. Students will build self-confidence,Repect, Disipline, character along with the value of conditioning True self defense and positive release of frustrations and energy. A true Martial art is one in which you can defend your self, loved ones and someone who can not defend themselves. A true martial art has no rules. Fights are over in seconds not minutes. With allot of hard work and training you can achieve more than you ever dreamed.

What is Kata and why is it important?

Kata is where a student can learn the most about their martial art. There are so many benefits from kata: cardio, muscle memory, self defense, joint locks, pressure points, flexibility, breathing control, and mental focus. There is a great misunderstanding about kata, and can be true if not taught or practiced correctly.  Kata includes everything needed to be lethal!  If not practiced properly, it will become a dance or memorized movements.  This is not even close to the purpose and training like this really defines what you know about any martial art. We take the intent that every move has an application, no wasted movement.  Adding attackers make it real, and there are as many meanings to movements as you could think of, providing it will work. The art to kata has many meanings, but we try to focus on good body mechanics and proper mind intent.

Kobudo

We also train with weapons for FUN!  You will rarely be walking down the street and have someone attack you when you are holding a traditional weapon.  We practice this art for fun and to preserve it as well.  We are certified to teach Matayoshi Kobudo as our primary weapons style.

Tournament Sparring

Local tournaments have an event labeled as fighting, or point fighting. This is designed for several reasons. One is to test what you know in a safe environment against someone you would not fight on a regular basis. Two, just plain fun because it is a sport.  Three, to feel the impact in a safe way to limit injury.  Safety is of the utmost importance, that is why there are many rules and protective equipment.

Ippon Kumite

One of our favorite activities to do is what we call "Ipon Kumite".  Ipon Kumite is designed to train you body and mind for street combat.  We will work on situational fighting, multiple attackers and kata applications.  This style of fighting has no rules, and will train you for the ultimate conditioned responses.  This is the "Martial" in the art. We have to segment our training into sport and real combat.  Without this part of training, you could be creating a false sense of security. There are many Mcdojo's in the area that rely on sport combat as their main source of training, but reality says there are no rules, judges, or trophies in a real life situation. Continuous training in this manor creates a habit, which results in a serious defect when it comes to actual combat!
